Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 4:16 PM EST Feb. 20, 2018 – National Weather Service

... A Flood Warning for urban areas and small streams remains in
effect until midnight EST Wednesday/1100 PM CST Tuesday/ for
Elkhart... St. Joseph... northern Kosciusko... Starke... Marshall and La
Porte counties...

At 410 PM EST/310 PM CST/, widespread flooding was underway in many
locations, especially across Marshall, northern Elkhart and southern
St Joseph Indiana counties. 2 to over 5 inches of rain has been
reported in these areas, causing rivers, creeks and streams to
overflow their banks and low areas to rapidly fill with water.

An additional 1 to 2 inches of rain is expected across the warning
area, with locally higher amounts possible into the overnight hours.
This will cause the flooding to expand further. Numerous Road
closures have occurred with washouts reported in some areas.
Evacuations have occurred along some rivers and creeks.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.
